ESPN had an awesome piece on this morning about truth and lies in the court of public opinion. With some major athletes getting busted for lying and politicians who live and die with every soundbite, its a wonder we believe anything.
What motivates people to lie? What motivates spin?
I'm not arrogant enough to think I have the right answer or that I can resolve the issue in a blog, but I do think part of the issue has to do with public opinion. Some people care so much about what people think about them that they will compromise who they really are in order to protect an image. And most of these images are made up of other peoples unrealistic expectations.
In ministry there are people who can't be themselves because they are crippled by the fear of what "so and so is going to think". How long are we going to let public opinion control truth? Are we capable of thinking for ourselves anymore?
